Pop Quiz:
Basing your answer on your experience during the last thirty days in the tech staffing world, how would you rate the following statements.
T – True S – Sometimes true Q – Repeat the question M – Meh, I wish! N – Um, not true? WTH – What the heck?
A) IT jobs are a dime a dozen. So, everybody! Shop for the coolest company that will let you work in your holey pajamas from the edge of your cluttered coffee table. Don’t worry, you’ll get paid top-dollar that will more than make up for inflation (What inflation? Is that even real?) And, best of all, “team building meetings” that are supposed to “join creative problem solvers at the company” are completely cool about you “quietly quitting” the Zoom call while you work on your other laptop/side-hustle (That’s what mute and block cam are for!)
B) IT jobs have fallen off the face of the earth for most people unless you’re a savant with PhD in highly specialized tech like AI, Global Cyber Security, and Bitcoin algorithms. The industry automated itself to extinction! With the kind of job I can get in IT, I may as well work at my Aunt Fay’s pecan farm.
C) Sure, I have no (air quotes) real-world experience, but I have all these degrees and certificates framed on my mom’s wall. I worked my ass off in college, and I’m going to have my pick of all the top tech companies! My credentials will land me interviews, and I’ll just sit back and make those recruiters squirm for me. They want this kind of exceptional? They’re going to have to pay for it!
D) I have put in the effort to broaden my tech skill set. I crave puzzles, challenges, multi-dimensional problem-solving. Working with others, preferably in person, brings out the best in me. When I’m a part of a strong, collaborative group where everyone has brought their unique skills, we all push each other to move mountains! I am passionate about learning, growing, communicating, and playing an active role in it all coming together.
Now, imagine you’re the one doing the hiring.
Extraordinary PRESSURE.
That’s right. The pressure is on YOU to build YOUR company by recruiting the right people—one by one. Who will bring exactly what you need to the team of other talent you’ve carefully examined, vetted, and welcomed into the fold?
This isn’t just an ordinary candidate you’re looking for.
The pressure of knowing the impact one misstep—one “bad fit”—can bring to an entire company is profound.
We’re talking “butterfly-effect” profound.
Now, look back at the quiz. Not finding it so campy now, are you?
